DOLLS OF THE WORLD

Dolls are present in every culture on our planet. Dolls from several continents are represented in this section.

Highlights include the popular matryoshka, the traditional Russian nesting dolls that were first produced in 1890 and were possibly influenced by Japanese dolls. Made of wood, they represent a countrywoman and can be pulled apart into two pieces. They contain a similar, smaller doll inside, which in turn can be pulled apart to reveal another smaller matryoshka in its interior.

Visitors will also find dolls from different parts of Mexico in this section. The best-known dolls are made of cardboard and have different names written on them, but the cloth dolls from Puebla and the straw dolls from Chiapas are also very popular.

The Museum also has an important collection of Japanese kokeshi dolls, some of which are on display here. In this section, the doll made in Lapland of reindeer hide also stands out, as do several African dolls, such as the Kenyan wooden doll and the one from South Africa.
